The burger grilling empire formerly known as Rogue States (now Black & Orange) opened a new location on 14th Street Tuesday night – treating VIPs to rounds of mini-sized versions of its favorites as well as introducing a new bloody mary cocktail-burger creation “Hair of the Dog,” before opening its doors to the public at midnight.
Chef Raynold Mendizabal welcomed dozens of DC hunger hounds to Ciao Down (a garlic, tomato and basil burger), Pardon [His] French (black truffle oil and thyme), try the original Rogue State (house spices, chipotle and cilantro) or see if they could handle the spicy No Burger, No Cry (habanero peppers!) while making their mark — literally, guests wrote well wishes with paint pen on the back wall.
A colorful night, staff wore t-shirts outlining Black & Orange’s well done mantra: Pink or No Pink (Get it?!) and Mendizabal laughingly semi-explained of the new name ”It’s about the flames on the grill.”
That is, until he really goes rogue and tells everyone his is the official hamburger of Halloween.
